Lethbridge Police hosting first-ever Charity Checkstop on Saturday

Nov 25, 2020 | 8:48 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service is hosting a special Charity Checkstop this weekend.

On Saturday, November 28, LPS and the Lethbridge Police Association will be at the ENMAX Centre parking lot from noon until 4:00 p.m. Volunteers will work the checkstop collecting unwrapped toys and monetary donations for the Lethbridge Family Services Angel Tree campaign. Community members can also donate non-perishable food items for the Lethbridge Food Bank.

Each gift bundle for the Angel Tree campaign is carefully packed for every child with something on their wish list, something inspirational to fuel their imaginations and something educational to nourish their minds.

Lethbridge Family Services is expected an even greater call for donations this year due to the hardships caused by COVID-19.

“We will need a lot of assistance and increased fundraising to make sure every child and family who needs help at Christmas this year receives a gift bundle,” said director of advancement and communications for LFS, Michelle Gallucci.

“Events like the Charity Checkstop hosted by [the] Lethbridge Police Service gives our campaign a much needed boost and we are so thankful.”

Meanwhile, the Lethbridge Food Bank is putting a focus on food hampers as part of the Christmas Hope campaign. More details on that campaign can be found here.

Executive director at the food bank, Maral Kiani Tari, said they expect an increase in requests for support this holiday season.

“We are planning and preparing for the holiday season. We know that normally colder months are busy times, and with the pandemic, this year has been more challenging for many,” she said.

“We are here to help and support individuals and families who need a bit extra to alleviate some stress. Events as such help us feed the need in the community.”

Constable Stewart Kambeitz with Lethbridge Police said the event is a win-win for the police service and community.

“The Lethbridge Police Service is pleased to have an opportunity to have a positive interaction with the public, while helping to support those in need,” he stated in an LPS-issued release.

For Saturday’s Charity Checkstop, barricades will be set up at the ENMAX Centre so supporters can drive in and drop off donations safely. COVID-19 health guidelines will be followed to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
