LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Police will be out this weekend keeping the roads safe.

The 2020 Christmas Check Stop Campaign begins Saturday, December 12. The goal is to curb the number of impaired drivers and allow everyone to get home safely to their loved ones.

Due to COVID-19, this year’s campaign will see some changes. Police will be taking extra precautions in order to keep both drivers and officers safe at the check stop locations.

This year’s initiative will also mark the first time officers will be armed with new sanctions under Bill 21. Lethbridge Police say not only will the new legislation allow officers to administer stricter penalties on the road, it should also streamline the process and allow them more time to stop other impaired drivers.

In addition to looking for impaired drivers, police will also be checking vehicles for valid documentation, including driver’s licenses, vehicle registration and insurance as well as equipment, liquor and other violations.

Anyone who observes a suspected impaired driver should call 911 immediately if it is safe to do so. Lethbridge Police are reminding people to always arrange a safe ride home.
