Alberta surpasses 80,000 COVID-19 cases

EDMONTON, AB. — A total of 22 new COVID-19-related deaths were reported in Alberta on Sunday (Dec13), for the province’s single deadliest 24 hours since the pandemic began in early March. There are also 1,717 new cases.

The death toll is now 719, up from 697. The previous one-day high was 20, recorded on Nov. 16.

On Dec. 6 the province recorded its 600th fatality, the 500th came on Nov. 23, and the 400th on Nov. 11.

Active cases provincially stand at 20,562, an increase of 490.

Alberta also surpassed the 80,000 mark for total cases, now at 80,099. It is the third province to hit that mark, with Ontario (138,504) and Quebec (161,921) getting there some time ago. The next closest is B.C. with 40,797.

However, Alberta still has the highest rate of active cases, as well as the most total active cases, of any Canadian province or territory.

Alberta has also passed the 2.5 million mark in terms of tests completed, while almost 1.569 million individual Albertans have been tested.

The regional breakdown for COVID-19 in Alberta is as follows:

  • Edmonton zone – 34,014 cases, 9,778 active
    • 352 deaths
    • 388 in hospital, 87 in ICU
  • Calgary zone – 31,533 cases, 7,268 active
    • 234 deaths
    • 185 in hospital, 36 in ICU
  • North zone – 5,312 cases, 1,289 active
    • 55 deaths
    • 22 in hospital, four in ICU
  • South zone – 4,512 cases, 572 active
    • 51 deaths
    • 21 in hospital, three in ICU
  • Central zone – 4,518 cases, 1,589 active
    • 26 deaths
    • 57 in hospital, five in ICU

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,313 cases (two new), 30 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 1,243 cases (27 new), 216 active, seven deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 472 cases (9 new), 68 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 378 cases (four new), 52 active, three deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 387 cases (14 new), 96 active, two deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 371 cases (10 new), 63 active, three deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 371 cases (10 new), 94 active, five deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 289 cases (3 new), 36 active, five deaths
  • Cardston County – 217 cases (2 new), 47 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 138 cases, 12 active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 132 cases (3 new), 14 active, zero deaths
  • County of Newell – 128 cases (six new), 18 active, two deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 112 cases, 3 active, two deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 77 cases (8 new), 38 active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 55 cases (2 new), 7 active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – Nine cases, two active, zero deaths
