Coaldale RCMP arrest and charge “transient” following incident with knife

COALDALE, AB – Charges have been laid after Coaldale RCMP arrested a man carrying a large knife in the town.

On December 17, just after 3:00 p.m., RCMP received a complaint of a man walking in the area of 22 Avenue and 21 Street. The report stated that the man was upset and was brandishing a large, “hunting type” knife.

RCMP said that at one point, the man threatened to harm a younger person walking in the same area. The man was described as tall with facial tattoos, wearing dark clothing and a red ball cap.

Mounties attended the area but could not located the suspect.

Later on, at roughly 6:30 p.m., a complaint was made to Coaldale RCMP regarding a man matching the same description stumbling along a ditch area near 21 Avenue westbound in Coaldale. RCMP said the man appeared disorientated. Patrols of the area were conducted but again, the man was not found.

RCMP received another complaint at around 7:45, reporting that the man police were looking for was in the west area of Coaldale near some local restaurants. The suspect was eventually found in a restaurant washroom.

He was arrested without incident. Upon his arrest, a small amount of drugs were located on his person and Mounties said that provided some rationale for his “erratic behaviour”.

RCMP note that charges will be laid for drug possession and attempted assault with a weapon to the 33-year-old man, who Mounties noted is a “transient with no fixed address”.

“He will be released with conditions not to be in the Town of Coaldale,” stated a release from Coaldale RCMP.

The accused will appear in Lethbridge Provincial Court on March 10, 2021.
