COVID growth slowing in South Zone: active cases fall by 121 in one week

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its report on COVID-19 for Monday, detailing statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,240 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 91,459. Of those, 19,165 cases are active while 71,434 people have recovered.

Approximately 78 per cent of the new infections were in the Edmonton and Calgary Zones as they saw 525 and 448 positive tests respectively.

Meanwhile, just 19 contracted the virus in the South Zone, which is one of the lowest single-day regional amounts we have seen in many weeks.

Locally, six people each in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat tested positive. Several local geographic areas saw no increase since Sunday’s story.

Active infections have fallen as well, decreasing across the South Zone by 122 from the same time last week and by 72 in Lethbridge.

Since yesterday’s update, nine Albertans have died from COVID-19 with eight of those in the Edmonton Zone and one in the Calgary Zone.

Provincially, 795 patients are currently hospitalized and 151 have been admitted to intensive care.

With an additional 18,306 tests being completed in the past 24 hours, there have now been 2,656,852 tests done on 1,616,542 different people.

Below is a breakdown of cases by health zone:

  • Edmonton zone – 39,249 cases, 9,147 active
    • 436 deaths (eight new)
    • 456 in hospital, 87 in ICU
  • Calgary zone – 35,649 cases, 6,748 active
    • 275 deaths (one new)
    • 224 in hospital, 46 in ICU
  • North zone – 6,035 cases, 1,137 active
    • 60 deaths
    • 30 in hospital, seven in ICU
  • Central zone – 5,470 cases, 1,551 cases
    • 34 deaths
    • 72 in hospital, nine in ICU
  • South zone – 4,790 cases, 461 active
    • 54 deaths
    • 13 in hospital, two in ICU

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,338 cases (one new), 42 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 1,339 cases (six new), 155 active, seven deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 496 cases (three new), 42 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 425 cases (one new), 55 active, three deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 418 cases (two new), 58 active, two deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 415 cases (three new), 43 active, three deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 417 cases (six new), 78 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 301 cases (one new), 19 active, six deaths
  • Cardston County – 245 cases (one new), 46 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 142 cases, five active, two deaths
  • County of Newell – 136 cases, 14 active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 137 cases, 10 active, zero deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 113 cases, one active, two deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 94 cases (one new), 29 active, three deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 67 cases, 14 active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 11 cases, three active, zero deaths
