AHS reports record single-day COVID deaths, 652 cases

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its COVID-19 update for Tuesday, detailing the numbers compiled over the past 24 hours.

652 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 112,743. Of those, 13,220 cases are active while 98,178 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 18 people contracted the virus including six in Lethbridge and five in Cardston County.

Active infections regionally and in the city remain flat at 308 and 109 respectively.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said that 38 Albertans have died from COVID since yesterday’s update. By LNN’s math, however, that number adds up to 39.

This includes 23 deaths in the Edmonton Zone, seven in the Calgary Zone, six in the Central Zone, two in the North Zone, and one in the South Zone. To date, COVID has claimed the lives of 1,345 people in the province.

The death in the South Zone was for a person from Medicine Hat.

Provincially, 819 patients are currently hospitalized and 132 have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 9,336 tests completed over the past day, there has now been a total of 2,950,446 tests conducted on 1,697,614 different people.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone:

  • Edmonton Zone – 47,798 cases, 5,042 active
    • 436 in hospital, 61 in ICU
    • 714 deaths (23 new)
  • Calgary Zone – 43,140 cases, 4,778 active
    • 211 in hospital, 41 in ICU
    • 425 deaths (seven new)
  • North Zone – 8,494 cases, 1,636 active
    • 68 in hospital, eight in ICU
    • 79 deaths (two new)
  • Central Zone – 7,834 cases, 1,394 active
    • 84 in hospital, 16 in ICU
    • 62 deaths (six new)
  • South Zone – 5,300 cases, 308 active
    • 20 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 65 deaths (one new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Brooks – 1,357 cases, 14 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 1,517 cases (six new), 109 active, 10 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 549 cases (two new), 31 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 502 cases (three new), 44 active, seven deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 468 cases (one new), 34 active, one death
  • Medicine Hat – 498 cases (four new), 36 active, 10 deaths (one new)
  • Lethbridge County – 466 cases (one new), 37 active, seven deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 318 cases, eight active, six deaths
  • Cardston County – 325 cases (five new), 49 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 150 cases (one new), seven active, two deaths
  • County of Newell – 146 cases, seven active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 144 cases, five active, zero deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 123 cases (two new), 18 active, three deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 116 cases, three active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 73 cases (one new), four active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 12 cases, one active, zero deaths
