875 new COVID cases in Alberta, satellite vaccine clinics ramp up pace for ER workers

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its COVID-19 update for Wednesday, detailing the numbers compiled over the past 24 hours.

875 cases were confirmed across the province today, bringing the total to 113,618. Of those, 12,838 cases are active while 99,412 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 50 people tested positive including 23 in Cardston County and 12 in Lethbridge.

Active infections in the region rose by 30 while that number in Lethbridge increased by nine.

Since yesterday’s update, 23 Albertans died from COVID with 11 in the Calgary Zone, nine in the Edmonton Zone, two in the Central Zone, and one in the North Zone. To date, the virus has claimed the lives of 1,368 in the province.

Provincially, 820 patients are currently hospitalized and 137 have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 15,880 tests completed over the past day, there has now been a total of 2,966,346 tests conducted on 1,701,219 different people.

AHS has not fully updated its stats for the day. More information will be added here once that becomes available.

As of the end of January 12, 58,144 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered across the province with a rate of 1,314.9 doses per 100,00 population.

So far, there have been 10 adverse events following immunization reported.

In order to accelerate the number of emergency department staff getting vaccinated, AHS announced that they have opened nine satellite vaccine clinics in hospitals around the province.

To date, more than 425 emergency department staff have been vaccinated.

“These satellite clinics are increasing opportunities for eligible emergency department staff and physicians to get vaccinated and are another way Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health are working to provide COVID-19 vaccine to as many health-care workers as possible during this first phase of the vaccine rollout.”

The satellite clinics are temporary facilities.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone:

  • Edmonton Zone – 48,100 cases, 4,828 active
    • 428 in hospital, 66 in ICU
    • 723 deaths (nine new)
  • Calgary Zone – 43,506 cases, 4,752 active
    • 218 in hospital, 43 in ICU
    • 436 deaths (11 new)
  • North Zone – 8,619 cases, 1,612 active
    • 74 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 80 deaths (one new)
  • Central Zone – 7,896 cases, 1,275 active
    • 80 in hospital, 14 in ICU
    • 64 deaths (two new)
  • South Zone – 5,350 cases, 338 active
    • 20 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 65 deaths

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Brooks – 1,357 cases, 13 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 1,529 cases (12 new), 118 active, 10 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 551 cases (two new), 32 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 508 cases (six new), 50 active, seven deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 472 cases (four new), 36 active, one death
  • Medicine Hat – 502 cases (four new), 35 active, 10 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 466 cases, 37 active, seven deaths
  • Cardston County – 348 cases (23 new), 66 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 320 cases (two new), eight active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 151 cases (one new), eight active, two deaths
  • County of Newell – 146 cases, seven active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 144 cases, four active, zero deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 130 cases (seven new), 24 active, three deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 116 cases, three active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 74 cases (one new), five active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 12 cases, one active, zero deaths
