21 new COVID cases in Cardston County, 11 in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its COVID-19 update for Sunday, detailing the numbers compiled over the past 24 hours.

750 cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 116,837. Of those, 12,234 cases are active while 103,167 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, there were 45 positive tests including 21 in Cardston County and 11 in Lethbridge.

Much of the Blood Tribe is in Cardston County. On Friday, the local First Nation implemented 11 new public health restrictions aimed at curbing the recently-rising COVID cases.

Active infections both in the South Zone and in Lethbridge rose slightly today.

Since yesterday’s update, 19 Albertans have died from COVID including eight in the Edmonton Zone, seven in the Calgary Zone, and two each in the Central and North Zones. To date, the virus has claimed the lives of 1,436.

Provincially, 738 patients are currently hospitalized and 123 have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 11,484 tests completed in the past day, there has now been a total of 3,020,251 tests conducted on 1,715,084 different people.

Across Alberta, 85,935 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered as of the end of January 16.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone:

  • Edmonton Zone – 49,130 cases, 4,303 active
    • 363 in hospital, 51 in ICU
    • 755 deaths (eight new)
  • Calgary Zone – 44,662 cases, 4,610 active
    • 206 in hospital, 46 in ICU
    • 458 deaths (seven new)
  • North Zone – 9,179 cases, 1,704 active
    • 77 in hospital, eight in ICU
    • 87 deaths (two new)
  • Central Zone – 8,209 cases, 1,182 active
    • 65 in hospital, 12 in ICU
    • 70 deaths (two new)
  • South Zone – 5,525 cases, 415 active
    • 27 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 66 deaths

  • Brooks – 1,361 cases, 11 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 1,584 cases (11 new), 148 active, 10 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 571 cases (four new), 44 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 531 cases (five new), 66 active, seven deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 484 cases (two new), 38 active, one death
  • Medicine Hat – 515 cases (two new), 37 active, 11 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 482 cases (one new), 29 active, seven deaths
  • Cardston County – 397 cases (21 new), 108 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 324 cases, eight active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 154 cases (one new), 11 active, two deaths
  • County of Newell – 148 cases (two new), three active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 144 cases, three active, zero deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 141 cases (one new), 24 active, three deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 116 cases, two active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 86 cases (five), 17 active, three deaths
