Lethbridge man charged in connection to two break-ins involving weapons

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has charged a local man following a pair of break-and-enters.

Alex Styra, 20, of Lethbridge, faces 23 charges in total.

Around 1:00 pm on Sunday, January 31, 2021, police responded to a report of a break-in with a firearm on the 1000 block of 18 Street South.

The homeowner heard a window break and confronted a man holding a handgun. The suspect fled the house, stole a bicycle from the yard, and proceeded to another home a block away.

At the second house, the homeowner confronted the suspect, who was carrying a knife. Just before fleeing the scene, police claim that Styra threatened the homeowner’s dog with a gun.

He was arrested at gunpoint in the middle of 17 Street South and 10 Ave South.

After making the arrest, LPS learned of another incident that occurred just before these two at 12:45 pm. They received a report from a homeowner on the 1000 block of 19 Street South that the same individual had threatened to kill dogs that were barking at him as he walked down an alley.

The charges against Styra includes two counts of break and enter and commit assault with a weapon, two counts of using an imitation firearm during an indictable offence, two counts of possessing a weapon dangerous to the public, two counts of uttering threats to kill an animal, two counts of possessing a controlled substance, one count of assault with a weapon, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, one count of possessing a firearm in contravention of a prohibition order, one count of theft under $5,000, one count of mischief to property, and eight counts of breaching of probation orders.

He was remanded in custody and will appear in court on February 5, 2021.
