LETHBRIDGE, AB– After multiple locals have been handed hefty speeding and racing fines, Lethbridge Police says they are starting to crack down on city speedsters.

With the weather starting to warm up, LPS says that brings out local racers to the streets.

Kevin Talbot with the Traffic Response Unit, says speeding, racing, stunting, and careless driving fines are being handed out nearly every day.

LPS detailed what the fines are for these driving infractions:

  • Speeding – ranges from $110 to $495 – two to six demerits
  • Stunting – $567 – three demerits
  • Racing – $567 – six demerits
  • Careless driving – $567 – six demerits

Talbot says the LPS has received many complaints about people speeding and creating noise in local neighbourhoods.

“The problematic times appear to be during the evening and at night when citizens are trying to relax but are disturbed by the sound of vehicles’ roaring engines and squealing of tires.”

He doesn’t have exact numbers this year of how many fines have been given out, but it has been occurring almost daily.

Each Friday and Saturday, LPS says multiple fines have been issued on Mayor Magrath Drive South as well as 3rd Avenue South.

“This activity won’t be tolerated and we’re out there to improve [Lethbridge].”

Talbot assures citizens that LPS is planning on being very strict with traffic violations.
