52 drug poisoning deaths in Lethbridge in 2020, nearly double provincial rate
LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is reporting a record number of deaths due to illicit drug consumption in Lethbridge last year.
Note: Alberta Health told LNN that “drug poisoning” is the term used for statistical purposes and it means the same thing as an overdose.
The latest Alberta Substance Use Surveillance Report shows, in 2020, 52 people in Lethbridge died as a result of drug poisoning.
In December alone, AHS says this includes eight people in the city. That number is tied for the highest single-month death toll from drug poisoning with July 2018 and June 2020.
