Province looking for public engagement on Occupational Health and Safety Code

EDMONTON, AB– The Alberta Government is launching an online survey to hear Albertan’s opinion on the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code.

Provincial officials want to “improve health and safety outcomes for workers and streamline requirements to reduce unnecessary administrative burden.”

As part of their three-year plan of reviewing the OHS Code, getting public engagement is an early step.

During each phase, parts of the code will be reviewed, Albertans will be engaged to provide feedback, and the code will be updated and implemented.

“The OHS Code has not been extensively updated since 2009 and changes are long overdue. Health and safety rules need to keep pace with changes to workplaces, standards, best practices, and technological advances.”

“They also need to be streamlined and simplified. Together, a revised OHS Act and updated OHS Code will help workers and job creators achieve better health and safety results,” says Minister of Labour and Immigration, Jason Copping.

Copping hopes to see what members of the public suggest the government do with the OHS Code.

“Workplace health and safety is everyone’s responsibility. The human and financial cost of workplace injuries and illnesses is too high. By updating OHS Code rules and making them easier to understand and follow, we can reduce those costs and ensure that every Albertan makes it home safely from work each day,” Copping adds.

He says he encourages Albertans to provide their input through the online survey.

The survey is currently open and closes on May 10.
