Alberta surpasses 10,000 active COVID cases

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Monday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

887 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 153,194. Of those, 10,582 cases are active while 140,614 people have recovered.

Among the new cases, 432 positive tests, or 39 per cent, were variants.

AHS did not release regional or local COVID breakdowns over the long weekend. Since it has been four days since the last in-depth report, we are unable to say how many cases locally or regionally are new.

Since April 1, however, active infections increased from 8,653 to the low-five-digits now.

Active cases across the South Zone rose by 14 but fell in Lethbridge by five.

Since yesterday’s update, four Alberta died from COVID including two in the Edmonton Zone and one each in the Calgary and Central Zones. To date, 1,998 Albertans have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 312 patients are currently hospitalized including 76 who have been admitted to intensive care.

1,923,707 different people have been tested for COVID.

707,482 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in Alberta as of the end of April 4.

  • Calgary Zone – 59,752 cases, 4,981 active
    • 119 in hospital, 38 in ICU
    • 606 deaths
  • Edmonton Zone – 58,144 cases, 2,365 active
    • 94 in hospital, 19 in ICU
    • 1,014 deaths
  • North Zone – 14,676 cases, 1,391 active
    • 32 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 149 deaths
  • Central Zone – 11,932 cases, 874 active
    • 32 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 123 deaths
  • South Zone – 8,478 cases, 878 active
    • 35 in hospital, nine in ICU
    • 106 deaths

  • Lethbridge – 3,388 cases, 507 active, 30 deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,181 cases, 166 active, six deaths

  • Brooks – 1,367 cases, two active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 809 cases, 54 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 737 cases, 122 active, eight deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 614 cases, 45 active, 17 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 419 cases, 64 active, six deaths
