AHS confirms 1,521 COVID cases in Alberta, 44% are variants

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Friday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,521 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 158,426. Of those, 13,059 cases are active while 142,360 people have recovered.

Approximately 44 per cent of today’s cases were variants.

In the South Zone, 89 people tested positive including 39 in Lethbridge and 15 in Medicine Hat.

Active infections in the city were flat but rose by 32 regionally.

Since yesterday’s update, two Albertans died from COVID with one from the Calgary Zone and one from the Edmonton Zone. To date, 2,007 people have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 333 patients are currently hospitalized including 83 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 15,611 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,819,812 tests completed on 1,940,076 different people.

779,817 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of April 8.

Since yesterday’s report, 674 new COVID variant cases were confirmed in Alberta with 45 of those coming from the South Zone.

Below is a breakdown of cases per regional health zone:

  • Calgary Zone – 62,139 cases, 6,064 active
    • 129 in hospital, 39 in ICU
    • 611 deaths (one new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 59,516 cases, 3,169 active
    • 100 in hospital, 21 in ICU
    • 1,017 deaths (one new)
  • North Zone – 15,366 cases, 1,718 active
    • 38 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 150 deaths
  • Central Zone – 12,386 cases, 1,050 active
    • 28 in hospital, eight in ICU
    • 123 deaths
  • South Zone – 8,789 cases, 947 active
    • 38 in hospital, 10 in ICU
    • 106 deaths

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 3,541 cases (39 new), 514 active, 30 deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,215 cases (five new), 137 active, six deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,227 cases (26 new), 242 active, three deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,099 cases (eight new), 135 active, 21 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,369 cases, three active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 827 cases (eight new), 52 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 772 cases (nine new), 119 active, eight deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 650 cases (15 new), 76 active, 17 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 427 cases (four new), 57 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 259 cases (seven new), 16 active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 204 cases (eight new), 26 active, three deaths
  • Cypress County – 168 cases, 21 active, zero deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 165 cases (two new), 38 active, four deaths
  • County of Newell – 164 cases, two active, two deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 133 cases, eight active, three deaths
