Tories’ climate plan includes 20-dollar-per-tonne carbon price

OTTAWA, ON – Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole has announced a 20-dollar-per-tonne carbon price for consumers as part of his party’s plan to tackle climate change.

It’s a major policy shift for the Tories, who have long campaigned to scrap the federal Liberals’ carbon pricing program.

O’Toole said the price would start at 20-dollars per tonne and rise to no higher than 50-dollars per tonne.

Canadians would pay into a Personal Low Carbon Savings Account’ each time they buy hydrocarbon-based fuel. They could in turn use that money to pay for products to help them live a “greener life”, such as a bike or bus pass.

The Conservatives stated that the climate plan will achieve substantially the same emissions reductions by 2030 as the plan currently in place by the Trudeau government.

O’Toole said, “Our plan takes swift action on climate change.”

“Our plan trusts Canadian families to be part of the climate change plan. When compared to the Trudeau Carbon Tax, our plan is just as effective in emission reduction but vastly superior in preserving jobs and growing the Canadian economy.”

In addition to implementing the Personal Low Carbon Savings Account, the plan includes several other measures, such as:

  • Requiring automakers to sell more zero emission vehicles
  • Lowering industrial emissions
  • Increasing use of renewable natural gas
  • Implementing a low carbon fuel standard

O’Toole added that his party “will fight climate change and protect the environment, but we won’t do it on the backs of hardworking Canadians.”
