No new COVID deaths in Alberta, but 1,616 new cases

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Friday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,616 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 167,793. Of those, 16,759 cases are active while 149,000 people have recovered.

898 cases, or about 55 per cent of today’s total, were variants of the virus.

In the South Zone, 69 people tested positive with 32 in Lethbridge and 12 in Medicine Hat.

Active infections in Lethbridge fell by four and regionally by two.

No Albertans died from COVID since yesterday’s update, leaving the total at 2,034 lives lost.

Provincially, 423 patients are currently hospitalized including 93 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 16,876 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,923,326 tests completed on 1,971,007 different people.

1,082,391 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of April 15.

Since yesterday’s report, 898 cases of COVID-19 variants were confirmed in Alberta with 44 of those coming from the South Zone.

Below is a breakdown of cases per regional health zone:

  • Calgary Zone – 66,175 cases, 7,453 active
    • 169 in hospital, 42 in ICU
    • 616 deaths
  • Edmonton Zone – 62,028 cases, 4,388 active
    • 146 in hospital, 32 in ICU
    • 1,029 deaths
  • North Zone – 16,788 cases, 2,285 active
    • 34 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 150 deaths
  • Central Zone – 13,456 cases, 1,629 active
    • 40 in hospital, four in ICU
    • 129 deaths
  • South Zone – 9,241 cases, 928 active
    • 34 in hospital, eight in ICU
    • 110 deaths

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 3,758 cases (32 new), 478 active, 32 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,354 cases (17 new), 253 active, three deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,260 cases (eight new), 108 active, seven deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,144 cases (seven new), 117 active, 22 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,376 cases (three new), nine active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 844 cases (three new), 39 active, 15 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 838 cases (nine new), 127 active, nine deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 707 cases (12 new), 103 active, 17 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 449 cases (three new), 35 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 264 cases, 17 active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 223 cases (one new), 41 active, three deaths
  • Cypress County – 186 cases (three new), 29 active, zero deaths
  • County of Newell – 172 cases, 10 active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 175 cases (two new), 24 active, four deaths
