OTTAWA, ON – Canada’s climate targets have changed.

In a virtual summit convened by United States President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Canada is boosting its targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 40 to 45 per cent of 2005 levels by 2030.

The announcement is a jump from the country’s previous target of 30 per cent.

Critics are not pleased with Trudeau’s pledge, with Green Party leader Annamie Paul saying while it is more of a cut than Canada had previously agreed to, the country still lags behind others.

Meanwhile, the U.S. President pledged to cut fossil fuel emissions by 50 to 52 per cent by 2030. The Biden administration-led event includes 40 world leaders.

Japan has also announced a new target, pledging to cut its emissions by 46 per cent below 2013 levels by 2030.
