Auditor general says Alberta’s medical-imaging tests system needs work

Apr 23, 2021 | 9:23 AM

EDMONTON, AB – The auditor general believes Alberta’s system of medical-imaging tests needs a lot of work to fix a patchwork of confusion and communication.

Doug Wylie says there are long wait times with some urgent-needs cases getting bounced to the back of the line.

Wylie, in his latest report, stated that the main culprit is a lack of centralized booking and planning.

He added that the other problem is antiquated systems, with handwritten forms being sent in by fax machine.

Wylie notes one in five of those handwritten forms is sent back, because the writing is so illegible it can’t be figured out.

In 2018-19, Alberta performed 647-thousand combined M-R-I and C-T exams at a cost of more than $170-million.
