“Rebellious events” not following rules are impacting the live events industry: ALEC

The Alberta Live Events Coalition (ALEC) is pleading with the public to follow guidelines set by the Alberta Government on live events.

The April 6th, indoor and outdoor events of up to 10 people were prohibited.

As the ALEC has been working with the government to pave the way for events to re-open safely, the group says so-called “rebellious events” that have continued to go against the rules are seriously harming the live events industry.

The ALEC was created as a task force in March of 2020 as a way for live events to discuss the best practices for staging live events during a global pandemic.

Lesley Plumley, Owner of LP Events and Chair of ALEC, voices her concern with the number of events being hosted without permission or exemption from the government.

“We have never wanted to open up events unsafely. However, the more we have rogue events popping up, the more it hurts our industry and continues to keep us closed.”

When communities hear of unauthorized or illegal events that end up being super-spreader incidents, ALEC says it paints industries in a bad light. This only hammers the nail in the coffin for the industry, as Alberta has already lost over $350 million in revenues due to COVID-19 in 2020.

The industry is looking for a plan from the government with a timeline on when things will re-open as they’re going into their second year in a row without revenues.
