LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta’s highways are set to be cleaned on Saturday.

The 45th annual highway cleanup takes place May 1 between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Volunteers wearing bright orange safety vests will be collecting trash along highways in the province to raise funds for community organizations.

Motorists are being advised to watch for participants, slow down, obey signs and use caution when passing cleanup crews.

The organizations benefiting from the cleanup include 4-H Clubs, Scouts, Girl Guides, schools, church organizations and other non-profit groups. They will earn $100 per kilometre cleaned.

Those taking part will follow all COVID-19 guidelines, including masking and physical distancing.

Volunteers have to be at least nine years old or older to participate, take part in a safety training program and be under adult supervision.

Through the cleanup last year, the Alberta government contributed $925,635 to 463 volunteer organizations involved in the event. About 12,000 participants collected over 32,000 bags of garbage while cleaning up more than 9,000 kilometres of Alberta roads.

In the event of inclement weather, the cleanup will be shifted to Saturday, May 8.
