2,007 new COVID cases in Alberta, 97 in South Zone

LETHBRIDGE, AB– Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Friday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

2,007 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 190,734. Of those, 21,828 cases are active while 166,824 people have recovered.

989 cases, or about 49 per cent of today’s total, were variants.

In the South Zone, 97 people tested positive.

Since yesterday’s update, seven Albertans died from COVID including three in the Calgary Zone and two each in the Central and North Zones. To date, 2,082 people have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 649 patients are currently hospitalized including 152 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 18,955 tests conducted over the past day, there have now been 4,156,536 tests have been completed on 2,036,735 different people.

1,562,713 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered as of the end of April 29.

Below is a breakdown of COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours:

  • Calgary Zone – 75,828 cases, 9,184 active
    • 251 in hospital, 62 in ICU
    • 632 deaths (three new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 68,253 cases, 5,992 active
    • 233 in hospital, 58 in ICU
    • 1,039 deaths
  • North Zone – 20,184 cases, 3,094 active
    • 80 in hospital, 16 in ICU
    • 158 deaths (two new)
  • Central Zone – 16,039 cases, 2,425 active
    • 54 in hospital, eight in ICU
    • 135 deaths (two new)
  • South Zone – 10,377 cases, 1,098 active
    • 31 in hospital, eight in ICU
    • 118 deaths
