Province announces new vaccine eligibility as 2,012 new COVID cases reported

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Premier Jason Kenney announced Monday new COVID-19 vaccine eligibility in Alberta.

Starting May 4, all staff workers within schools in the province are eligible for a vaccine. As well, workers in Child Care Centres are able to receive the shot under this new eligibility requirement.

As of May 3, 1,640,303 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta.

Kenney also added that stronger health measures in Alberta will be announced on May 4.

Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Monday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

2,012 new cases were reported for the province, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Alberta to 196,910. There are currently 23,608 active cases.

The South Zone saw 116 new cases with Lethbridge seeing 53 new.

15,054 of those active cases are variants of concern. This means variant cases make up 64 per cent of all active infections in Alberta.

658 people are in Alberta hospitals, with 154 individuals in intensive care (ICU).

Four new deaths were reported Monday, bringing the provincial death toll from the virus to 2,090. The South Health Zone did not see any new deaths.

On the testing front, 4,208,791 tests have been completed in Alberta, with 2,052,795 people tested in total. On May 2, 15,058 tests were conducted.

The province also saw 1,900 new variant cases.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone:

  • Calgary Zone – 78,583 cases, 9,942 active
    • 251 in hospital, 65 in ICU
    • 635 deaths (one new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 69,459 cases, 6,033 active
    • 233 in hospital, 58 in ICU
    • 1,042 deaths (two new)
  • North Zone – 20,809 cases, 3,308 active
    • 81 in hospital, 15 in ICU
    • 158 deaths
  • Central Zone – 16,896 cases, 2,807 active
    • 55 in hospital, 10 in ICU
    • 136 deaths (one new)
  • South Zone – 10,725 cases, 1,261 active
    • 33 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 119 deaths

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South:

  • Lethbridge – 4,327 cases (53 new), 452 active, 36 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,563 cases (26 new), 161 active, three deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,451 cases (18 new), 150 active, nine deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,313 cases (nine new), 140 active, 24 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,413 cases, 41 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,028 cases (18 new), 168 active, 12 deaths
  • Cardston County – 908 cases (one new), 56 active, 16 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 959 cases (24 new), 231 active, 18 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 506 cases (three new), 39 active, five deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 277 cases (one new), 15 active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 349 cases (nine new), 112 active, three deaths
  • Cypress County – 231 cases (two new), 36 active, zero deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 250 cases (six new), 65 active, five deaths
  • County of Newell – 181 cases, seven active, two deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 149 cases, 11 active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 57 cases, 22 active, zero deaths
  • Waterton – one case, zero active, zero deaths
