EDMONTON, AB – The Edmonton Oil Kings are champions.

The club claimed the 2020-2021 WHL Central Division championship trophy following their win Tuesday night against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

It’s the third straight year the Oil Kings have won the title and sixth time in modern franchise history.

This WHL season was unlike any other, being shortened to 24 games due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On-going testing for the novel coronavirus was conducted with a total of 2,219 tests revealing only one positive case in the Western Hockey League’s Central Division from February 12 to May 4. The league was split into various divisions of play to account for travel restrictions brought on by the pandemic.

WHL commissioner Ron Robison said, “the 2020-21 WHL season will enter the history books unlike any season prior.”

“The WHL commends all players, staff and officials, who sacrificed their normal way of life to participate in the WHL Central Division Regular Season and play with the same fierce competitiveness that is renowned with the Western Hockey League.”

“In such a unique and challenging season as this, it is important to recognize the accomplishments of our teams and we are pleased to present the Edmonton Oil Kings with the WHL Central Division Championship Trophy.”

Through 22 games, the Oil Kings secured a record of 19-2-0-1 with 39 points. The team has one game remaining on its schedule – a matchup with the Medicine Hat Tigers on Thursday, May 6.

In this final week of Central Division action, no team has scored more than Edmonton, who recorded 101 goals in 22 games (4.59 goals per game).

On the defensive end, the Oil Kings only allowed a mere 41 goals in 22 games (1.86 goals against per game).

St. Louis Blues prospect Jake Neighbours led the team in scoring with 33 points (nine goals, 24 assists) in 19 games.
