Procedure announced to determine final WHL 2020-21 season standings

May 6, 2021 | 11:48 AM

CALGARY, AB – The Western Hockey League has announced the plan to determine the final standings of the 2020-2021 season.

The year was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with clubs playing 24 games.

Because of this, the league will utilize a point-per-game percentage to determine the final division and overall WHL standings.

The league says should there be a tie in the final standings in any Division or overall, the following regulations will be used to determine the final order.

WHL REGULATION – TIEBREAKING PROCEDURE

The team with the greater points-per-game percentage will be awarded the higher position.

In the case of two clubs finishing tied in total point-per-game percentage in WHL standings, the edge will go to the team with the most wins on the season.

If that’s a tie, it will go to the club with the most points in games between the two team during the regular season. If the two teams are still even, the advantage will go to the club with the highest ratio when taking goals for and subtracting goals against in regular season play.

The league explained that if there is still a tie after that, the edge will go to the team with the highest ratio when taking goals for and subtracting goals against in games played between the two teams in question. It there is still a tie after that, the advantage will go to the club having scored the most goals in games played between the two teams in regular season action.
