May 6, 2021 | 4:03 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Thursday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

2,211 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 203,135. Of those, 24,497 cases are active while 176,536 people have recovered.

536 cases, or about 24 per cent of new infections, were variants.

In the South Zone, 117 people tested positive with 44 in Lethbridge, 23 in Lethbridge County, and 11 in Medicine Hat.

Active infections in the city rose by 19 and regionally by 41.

AHS reported no new COVID-19 deaths anywhere in the province today. To date, 2,102 Albertans have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 654 patients are currently hospitalized including 146 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 19,909 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 4,263,940 tests have been completed on 2,069,204 different people.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw spoke during Thursday’s COVID update about still having restrictions in place when more and more Albertans are getting vaccinated.

She said the public health measures are still “absolutely necessary.”

“Our first and second waves showed us that uncontrolled spread can happen quickly, and the higher cases get, the harder it is to bend the curve back down and reduce the spread of infection in the province.”

“This happened even before we were dealing with the more infection variants. We don’t yet know if we have hit the peak of new cases.”

Dr. Hinshaw stated that, because daily cases have gotten as high as they are now, it is no longer effective to simply target one particular sector or group with restrictions.

1,732,582 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered across the province as of the end of May 5.
