Daily COVID cases in Alberta fall under four digits for the first time in weeks

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Monday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

721 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 219,682. That is the lowest single-day total in at least a couple of weeks in Alberta with a few recent days being over 2,000.

There are 21,288 active cases while 196,246 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 40 people tested positive.

Since yesterday’s update, five Albertans died from COVID including two in the Edmonton Zone and one each in the Calgary, Central, and North Zones. To date, 2,148 Albertans have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 678 patients are currently hospitalized including 181 who have been admitted to intensive care.

7,002 tests were conducted over the past day, meaning there have now been 4,423,042 tests completed on 2,116,127 different people.

2,189,999 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered as of the end of May 15.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone:

  • Calgary Zone – 89,243 cases, 9,912 active
    • 261 in hospital, 70 in ICU
    • 650 deaths (one new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 74,732 cases, 4,930 active
    • 223 in hospital, 73 in ICU
    • 1,060 deaths (two new)
  • North Zone – 24,583 cases, 3,192 active
    • 92 in hospital, 16 in ICU
    • 167 deaths (one new)
  • Central Zone – 19,244 cases, 2,183 active
    • 64 in hospital, 12 in ICU
    • 148 deaths (one new)
  • South Zone – 11,831 cases, 1,039 active
    • 38 in hospital, 10 in ICU
    • 123 deaths
