LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Tuesday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

877 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 220,559. Of those, 20,013 cases are active while 198,394 people have recovered.

168 cases, or about 19 per cent of today’s total, were variants.

Over the past 12 days, active infections decreased by 5,213 since the pandemic peak of 25,226 on May 9.

In the South Zone, 45 people tested positive. Due to the AHS map that gives the local breakdown not updating yesterday, we are unable to see where each of the 45 new cases are.

Active infections in the region fell by 54, meaning active cases are now back in the three-digits for the first time in weeks.

Since yesterday’s update, four Albertans died from COVID including two from the North Zone and one each in the South and Central Zones. To date, 2,152 Albertans have died from COVID since the pandemic began.

The death in the South Zone was for a woman in her 70’s from Medicine Hat.

Provincially, 691 patients are currently hospitalized including 187 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 8,081 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 4,431,142 tests completed on 2,118,323 different people.

2,217,446 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in Alberta as of the end of May 16.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says progress is being made on the vaccine front but more work still needs to be done.

“Right now, second doses can be booked three-to-four weeks after the first for Albertans who are profoundly immunocompromised by calling 811. All other Albertans will have an opportunity to get their second dose about three-to-four months after their first dose… we don’t have an exact timeline yet for when this will occur but we will update you when more information is available.”
