AHS confirms just two new COVID cases in South Zone, 139 provincially

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released Tuesday’s report on COVID-19, covering statistics compiled over the last 24 hours.

139 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 229,458. Of those, 4,431 cases are active while 222,776 people have recovered.

There was virtually no change in total COVID cases in the South Zone with only two positive tests.

Active infections in Lethbridge fell by seven and regionally by 26.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says active cases province-wide are the lowest since March 9, before the third wave of the pandemic began.

“That’s over 20,000 fewer active cases than we had just one month ago. What’s more, our positivity rate has averaged 4.5% over the last seven days – that’s a sharp drop from the average of 11.7 in early May. Most importantly, Alberta’s average positivity rate is declining in all zones, which indicates progress is being made province-wide.”

“We have come far and we’re seeing real progress. If we all do our part, we can continue to keep cases decreasing and measures safely easing to keep everyone healthier in the weeks and months ahead.”

Since yesterday’s update, three Albertans died from COVID with one each in the Calgary, Central, and North Zones. To date, 2,251 people in Alberta have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 336 patients are currently hospitalized including 85 who have been admitted to intensive care.

3,123,226 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered as of the end of June 7.

With another 3,443 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 4,572,062 tests completed on 2,153,749 different people.
