Lethbridge-raised soccer star joins Kodiaks women’s team

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks have added another local product to their ranks.

Krista van Diemen has signed with the college’s women’s soccer team for the upcoming Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) fall season. She has playing experience with both the Coaldale Thunder and Lethbridge Football Club and recently wrapped a two-year stint with the Calgary Blizzards.

She brings versatility to the field, as a centre back who also plays goalkeeper. Kodiaks head coach Sean Carey said, “she’s awesome at both and she’s ready to jump to that next level.”

For the Lethbridge-raised student-athlete, signing with the college is the realization of a lifelong goal, with van Diemen saying, “ever since I was young, I’ve wanted to play for the college.”

“My mother actually works there, so it was just a win-win.”

She added that the key to her game is being vocal and assertive, whether it be as a centre back or as a goalkeeper. “As a defender, I don’t get pushed around,” she remarked.

“I stay strong and like to control the field, talk to everybody and make sure everything is going good. In net, I just like to be really loud and also like being able to run up with the ball, knowing what to look for in certain situations.”

Following a season with limited opportunities due to COVID-19, head coach Carey says he cannot wait to see recruits like van Diemen take the field for training camp.

“We’re very excited to add Krista. We can’t wait to get training camp going and give these new recruits exposure to a high level of play.”
