Active COVID cases in South Zone fall below 100, 14x less than in early May

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released Wednesday’s report on COVID-19, covering statistics compiled over the last 24 hours.

153 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 230,858. Of those, 2,639 cases are active while 225,941 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, six people tested positive.

Active infections in Lethbridge fell by two and regionally by eight. Active cases in the South Zone have fallen below 100 for the first time since last fall.

At the peak of the third wave of the pandemic on May 8, the region had 100 new COVID-19 cases just on that one day with 1,355 active.

This means that the South Zone had almost 14 times as many active cases then compared to now. More details below:

Since yesterday’s update, four Albertans died of COVID including three in the Calgary Zone and one in the North Zone.

Provincially, 255 patients are currently hospitalized including 67 who have been admitted to intensive care.

3,480,407 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered as of the end of June 14.

With another 6,708 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 4,618,678 tests completed on 2,165,649 different people.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 93,871 cases, 1,123 active
    • 119 in hospital, 33 in ICU
    • 692 deaths (three new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 77,560 cases, 596 active
    • 65 in hospital, 20 in ICU
    • 1,101 deaths
  • North Zone – 26,299 cases, 509 active
    • 32 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 190 deaths (one new)
  • Central Zone – 20,657 cases, 314 active
    • 26 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 163 deaths
  • South Zone – 12,460 cases, 97 active
    • 13 in hospital, three in ICU
    • 132 deaths

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 4,830 cases (one new), 16 active, 38 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,770 cases (one new), six active, three deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,609 cases, four active, 11 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,450 cases, six active, 24 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,502 cases, 10 active, 15 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 1,257 cases (one new), 25 active, 22 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,255 cases, nine active, 12 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,027 cases, one active, 18 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 571 cases, one active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 469 cases (three new), nine active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 314 cases, nine active, five deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 321 cases (one new), two active, six deaths
  • Cypress County – 301 cases, six active, one death
  • County of Newell – 241 cases (one new), six active, two deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 157 cases, one active, three deaths
