Former coach full of pride as Denis Shapovalov advances to first Grand Slam semifinal

TORONTO — A coach who used to train Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov says he’s full of pride as his former student advances to his first Grand Slam semifinal.

Shapovalov posted a win over Russia’s Karen Khachanov at Wimbledon on Wednesday.

Adriano Fuorivia, who trained Shapovalov for five years before he won the junior Wimbledon title in 2016, says his former student is exactly where he’s supposed to be.

Fuorivia says the 22-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont., is a humble and strong player, and has the potential to beat anybody.

Shapovalov faces top seed Novak Djokovic in the semifinals on Friday.

The Canadian’s previous best performance at a Grand Slam was at last year’s U.S. Open, where he reached the quarterfinals.
