“Burnout party” in Coaldale with over 1,000 attendees broken up by police due to safety concerns

COALDALE, AB – While the official Street Machine festivities took place over the weekend in Lethbridge, officers intervened in an off-shoot activity in Coaldale.

Alberta RCMP Media Relations Officer Cpl. Tammy Keibel says a business owner in Coaldale’s industrial area invited a couple of hundred people to their location for a gathering on Saturday, one that a community member described as a “burnout party.”

The actual attendance is estimated to be over one thousand.

Keibel told LNN that Coaldale RCMP, the RCMP Integrated Traffic Service Unit, and Lethbridge Police were called out to the event.

“With just that number of people, it’s still public highways, I can only imagine with the traffic congestion and the public safety concerns that way. The police basically intervened to break up the size of the gathering.”

A Facebook post from the Street Wheelers Car Club says they had “zero affiliation” to this party, adding that “Stunting events like this are extremely dangerous, and have a huge negative impact on the events that we work so hard for, and love so much. We do not, and WILL NOT, support any of these events now, or in the future.”

At least one ticket for stunting was issued and Keibel adds, as the investigation continues, there could be additional tickets or charges.

A member of the public said to LNN that two people, who were not in any vehicles at the time, were struck by vehicles at the event and injured. RCMP could not confirm if this is true.

The Town of Coaldale says they are aware of the party but will have to learn more about the situation before commenting any further.
