Do you believe Canadian Olympians are compensated fairly for winning medals?

Since late July, eyes have been glued to the screen watching athletes compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The competition has been fierce and event winners not only receive medals, they also get a financial reward. For Canadian athletes, that compensation comes from the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Athlete Excellence Fund (AEF).

Canadian gold medal winners are rewarded with $20,000 per medal, while silver medalists receive $15,000 per medal and bronze winners receive $10,000 per medal.

Compared to other countries, Canada is on the lower end of financial compensation for winning athletes. For example, a gold medal winner for Team USA would clinch $37,500 for their efforts, while their counterpart in Singapore would receive nearly 20 times more than that, at $737,000.

Do you think Canadian athletes are compensated fairly for winning Olympic medals?
