Aug 12, 2021 | 1:34 PM

CLARESHOLM, AB. — It`s an opportunity for some fun, special events … and a chance to educate the unknowing.

For many, the Town of Claresholm is a pit-stop between other locations. A chance to fill the gas tank or your tummy. Many people go through the town and don`t even know it`s history.

This weekend, beginning Friday, Aug 13 and going to Sunday, it`s a chance to join the locals and celebrate, as they host Claresholm Fair Days. They`re excited to share events with neighboring communities.

The theme for Claresholm Fair Days this year is “Wings Over Claresholm” – chosen as an opportunity to celebrate 80 years since the opening of the RCAF Station at the Claresholm Airport.

The Claresholm Museum will open two new exhibits in the War Years Gallery on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The newly opened CFI Flight Academy at the Claresholm Industrial Airport, just minutes west of town, will also host an airplane themed Movie Night on Saturday.

According to documentation in an article from Gary Watson, for SKIES Magazine, (“New life at one of Canada’s historic WWII airports“ – reprinted with permission), “The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) was created in 1939 to recruit and train pilots and aircrew. Canada had been chosen as the safest country to carry out the training.

“By the end of 1942, 150 airfields were built and operational across the country, with the majority on the western prairies. By the end of the Second World War, 131,553 students had graduated, of which 49,507 were pilots.“

The town of Claresholm would like everyone in the area to come out and celebrate with them.
