OTTAWA, ON – Youths in Canada now have another option when it comes to getting immunized against COVID-19.

Health Canada announced Friday that Moderna’s COVID vaccine has been approved for people aged 12-17.

Until now, it was only authorized for people 18 years old and up.

“After a thorough and independent scientific review of the evidence, Health Canada has determined that the vaccine is safe and effective at preventing #Covid19 in youth aged 12 to 17,” Health Canada Tweeted Friday morning.

Pfizer’s vaccine was already approved for Canadians aged 12 and older back in May.

Health Canada states that they and the Public Health Agency of Canada will continue to closely monitor the safety of the vaccine and take any actions if safety concerns are identified.

Currently, in Alberta, 67.3 per cent of Albertans aged 12-14 have at least one COVID vaccine dose while 57.1 per cent are fully immunized.

Among those aged 15-19, 68.8 per cent are partially vaccinated and 59.1 per cent have their two shots.
