LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Leisure Pool is currently open at the Cor Van Raay YMCA in Lethbridge following reports of a contamination.

The YMCA confirmed to LNN that on August 28, “a small number of clear foreign objects” believed to be safety glass or plexiglass were found by a member in the pool at the Aquatic Centre.

Staff immediately closed the centre and “conducted a thorough screening of the pool until no further foreign objects were found.”

Later in the day, a small cut to a YMCA member was reported to employees after they were treated by their parent. The YMCA said additional clear foreign objects were found in the pool the following days, resulting in additional closures of the Aquatic Centre.

The YMCA told LNN that “employees completed additional checks including manual screenings of the pools, manual vacuuming of pools, automatic overnight vacuuming of pools, checking all floors, railings, and slides and checking all filters and lights.” Pumps were also shut down to check their filters.

“When no foreign material is found through our screening and filtering, it is normal to re-open the Aquatic Centre.”

The YMCA added, “we currently do not know the source of the contamination, however, we are continuing to investigate potential sources, including reviewing video footage of the area.”

“We are confident that the Aquatic Centre is safe. Pools are currently open.”

Staff are conducting additional filtering and cleaning of the pool water to ensure the ongoing safety of YMCA members and guests.
