LETHBRIDGE, AB – Bernie Mbonikankuye is running for city council in this October’s Municipal Election and wants to see big changes in Lethbridge.

Mbonikankuye, 20, grew up in Lethbridge and says he has seen the ups and downs of the city stating he “was homeless for four years after dropping out of high school, then worked at King of Trade for two years.”

He hopes he can see large changes in the city as he focuses on the following key points:

  • Hopes to reduce petty crime and increase safety in the city
  • Increase the focus on providing and funding for social housing
  • Increase a nighttime economy and make Lethbridge more vibrant
  • Create an environmentally friendly space by opening up bike lanes and bike/E-mobility path infrastructure

The experience Mbonikankuye says he brings is that he knows what it’s like to “live on the street, I bring that street experience, that’s real-life experience.”

“I have always talked to family and friends about how we can come up with solutions in Lethbridge, I was to see change and I want to get things done, that’s what is most important,” he adds.

When asked why residents should vote for him he says he’s dedicated to serving the city.

“I’m very dedicated, I’m pretty persistent and I’m young, the thing about us young people is that we’re not all talk we actually are hungry for change we don’t accept talk and we want real change, that’s what Lethbridge really needs for the next four years.”

Mbonikankuye finished off by saying he would listen to the residents in Lethbridge on the issues in the city, prioritizing communication between city council and Lethbridge community members.

General voting day for the 2021 Municipal Election is October 18.
