Alberta intensive care doctors want government to increase COVID restrictions

CALGARY, AB. – Alberta doctors are calling on the government to restrict unvaccinated people from indoor, public spaces.

The call today came as COVID-19 intensive care admissions reached an all-time high.

Alberta Health Services says 202 people with the virus are in intensive care, surpassing the previous high of 182 admissions in May.

65 intensive care physicians from across the province say the government must act with urgency to protect an already overwhelmed health-care system.

In an open letter, the group says current measures in Alberta won’t be enough to interrupt COVID-19 transmission or increase vaccine uptake.

It says the United Conservatives should immediately implement government-mandated vaccine passports that require Albertans to show proof of vaccination to enter any indoor public spaces that offer non-essential services.

Alberta Health Services says intensive care capacity is operating at 90 per cent with surge spaces added.

Without additional surge beds, capacity would be at 148 per cent.
