Warrior Relay Horse Race kicks off Saturday in memory of Jason Goodstriker

Sep 23, 2021 | 2:17 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – As part of the Rocky Mountain Turf Club’s (RMTC) Fall race series, the Warrior Relay Horse Race will take place on September 25th and 26th.

Starting at 1:00 pm both days, fans will need proof of vaccination to get into the grounds as well they will need to pay $10.

The Jason Goodstriker Memorial Warrior Race Championship added purse will pay $4500 for 1st Place plus Jackets, a Bronze Trophy, and a custom original Blanket.

Seniors aged 65 and older will have free entry into the grounds for the weekend.

RMTC gave an explanation of what the event is:

“The rider races bareback on thoroughbred horses and jumps from one horse to the next in each lap around a track. In total, the single rider does two transfers to three different horses in three laps. First to past the finish line, wins.

A horse can become dazed, running well past the finish line without stopping. Or worse, it could stop short of the white line at the beginning of the track, mistaking it for a barrier. Transferring from one horse to another doesn’t always go smoothly either.

The thoroughbreds can run in the wrong direction, making the team fall behind in the race. Or riders can miss their mark leaping on the animal’s back and falling off.

But the event was about more than just sport. It was about reconciliation and healing for a new generation.”

12 teams will compete on the weekend with the total purse for the entire event coming to $14,000.
