Herbicide Carryover in the 2022 crop year

Dry conditions raise concerns about herbicide carryover into 2022

MELFORT, SASK. – The 2021 growing season has been one of the worst on record for both severe drought and extreme heat.

Farmers can add herbicide carryover to a long list of concerns as they prepare for the next growing season.

An urgent notice from BASF stated there is a high degree of risk of injury for sensitive crops, such as canola, durum wheat and canary seed.

BASF Agricultural Solutions Canada Technical Service Manager Jeffrey Bertholet said the company is making additional recommendations on imidazoline-based herbicide labels, based off Environment Canada weather data.

Bertholet said growers who farm in the brown, dark brown, black, grey, or grey wooded soil zones who have received less than 125 millimetres of rainfall between June 1 and Sept. 1 should be aware of the possibility of herbicide carryover damage.

A complete list of recommendations can be found on the BASF website.
