Hurricanes open their regular season with a 9-2 win

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — The Hurricanes’ may be hoping their home opener against the Calgary Hitmen set the pace for the season.

While the first period saw the two teams matched for shots on goal, it was the Canes who made those shots pay off, with six goals to Calgary’s two.

Captain Jett Jones got things started, with an assist from Peter Repcik just 90 seconds in. Five minutes later, Logan McCutcheon lobbed in his first of the season on a power play and it was 2-0 for the home team.

At the mid point in the frame, Calgary’s David Adaszynski put his team on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal.

Noah Boyko moved ion an assist from Justin Hall at 11:46, taking the Canes to a 3-1 lead. From there, it wasn’t until the last minute of the period that a final pair of goals appeared.

With 40 seconds on the clock, Alex Thacker caught a rebound to slide one through the pipes for the Canes, and with five seconds remaining, Adam Kydd replied for the Hitmen. However, the period ended 6-2 for the Canes.

After the flurry of goals in the first period, the second period offered less action but, it was all in favour of the home team. There were just two goals, both courtesy of Noah Boyko, at 7:24 and 11:27. The period ended with the Canes leading 6-2 and a Hat Trick for Boyko.

The final 20-minutes belonged to the Hurricanes. Just 38-seconds in, Justin Hall took an assist from Trevor Thurston, and the score was 7-2. At the 13:19 mark, it was Chase Wheatcroft on the puck and in the last five minutes, Logan Barlage added the final goal, for a game-winning score of 9-2 for the Hurricanes.

The Canes out shot the Hitmen 44-43, while the game tallied ten minor penalty minutes for Calgary and eight for Lethbridge.

All three stars in the game go to the Canes, #1 Justin Hall, #2 Noah Boyko #3 Alex Thacker.

The two teams have a rematch on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 in Calgary.
