LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a matchup filled with more penalties than goal and resulted in the first loss of the season for the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

At the ENMAX Centre Wednesday night (Oct. 6), the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings defeated the ‘Canes 2-1.

FIRST PERIOD

No goals were scored in the first, but the opening frame saw a handful of calls from the officials.

At the 6:02 mark, Edmonton’s Jakub Demek was issued a minor for hooking, but Lethbridge was unable to deliver on the power play. Minutes later, his teammate Blake Heward received a minor for roughing, along with Lethbridge’s Ty Nash. Both skaters were sent to the box.

Shortly before the buzzer sounded, Demek was issued another penalty, a minor for tripping at the 18:57 mark.

SECOND PERIOD

As the players started the second period, Ethan Peters od the Oil Kings was given a minor for tripping 1:34 into the frame. Teammate Simon Kubicek was later issued a minor for roughing at the 12:02 mark. He was sent to the box along with Lethbridge’s Jett Jones, who was also penalized.

At 12:57, Lethbridge was called for having too many men on the ice. The minor was served by Chase Wheatcroft and put Edmonton on the power play.

At the 19:46 mark, Edmonton’s Logan Dowhaniuk was issued a minor for roughing. Right before the period came to a close, at 19:59, Jalen Luypen scored his first of the season to put the Oil Kings up 1-0 going into the final period.

THIRD PERIOD

4:11 into the game’s final frame, Trevor Thurston of the Hurricanes was sent to the box for roughing.

That must have been the burst of inspiration Lethbridge needed, as Yegor Klavdiev scored his third of the season at the 8:01 mark, assisted by Alex Cotton. The game was now tied!

The ‘Cane Train was stopped though, at 17:42, when Logan Dowhaniuk scored what turned out to be the game-winner for Edmonton, off an assist by Tyler Horstmann.

The Oil Kings left the ENMAX Centre with a 2-1 victory.

Edmonton’s goaltender Sebastian Cossa was named the game’s first start, with Dowhaniuk named second star and Lethbridge’s net-minder Bryan Thomson receiving third star honours.
