Statements to police admissible as Crown evidence in upcoming trial for slain Red Deer doctor

Oct 7, 2021 | 8:46 AM

RED DEER, AB – Audio and video statements made to police by a man accused of killing a Red Deer doctor last year will be used as Crown evidence in the suspect’s trial next month.

This following a ruling by Justice Paul Belzil on Wednesday after the conclusion of a voir dire or pre-trial applications made in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench this week.

The mini hearing also determined the statements made by 55-year-old Deng Mabiour, were made voluntarily.

Mabiour is charged with first-degree murder, assault with a weapon, and assault of a police officer in the Aug. 10, 2020 killing of Dr. Walter Reynolds at the Village Mall Walk-In Clinic in Red Deer.
