Hurricanes earn 2-1 overtime win against Red Deer Saturday night

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It took an extra period, but the Lethbridge Hurricanes managed to pull out the win on home ice Saturday night.

The ‘Canes welcomed the Red Deer Rebels to the ENMAX Centre in front of a crowd of 2,727 fans.

FIRST PERIOD

Kalan Lind was able to score the game’s first goal, right after the first puck drop at the 2:25 mark, to put Red Deer up early, 1-0. The rest of the opening frame saw no more goals, but a slew of penalties.

At 4:10, Lethbridge’s Trevor Thurston was issued a minor for kneeing, with Liam Keeler of Red Deer called for tripping at the 11:55 mark.

At 12:51, it was Noah Boyko of the Hurricanes issued a minor for slashing. Thurston was sent to the box shortly after, at 14:54, receiving a minor for checking to the head.

At 18:10, Lind – who had scored the game’s lone goal at that point – was called for hooking before the buzzer sounded to signal the end of the first.

SECOND PERIOD

Early on in the frame, Christopher Sedoff of the Rebels was called for roughing at 1:25. His teammate Kyle Masters later got into it with Lethbridge’s Logan Barlage at the 4:38 mark and both men were sent to the penalty box.

At 11:56, Blake Gustafson was issued a minor for tripping. Lethbridge’s took advantage of the power play, with Alex Cotton scoring his first goal of the season.

Thanks to the assists from Chase Pauls and Yegor Klavdiev. Cotton’s goal tied the game at one. Before the buzzer went off to mark the end of the period, at 15:05, Trevor Thurston was issued his third penalty of the game: a minor for holding.

THIRD PERIOD & OVERTIME

The game’s final period saw no goals, but plenty of penalties before the two clubs headed to overtime.

At 2:45, Dallon Melin (Red Deer) was given a major for fighting and received an additional 10-minute misconduct penalty. Lethbridge’s Nolan Bentham was given a major for fighting in the scuffle.

Logan Barlage (Lethbridge) received a minor at 11:07 for roughing, while Red Deer’s Liam Keeler was called for hooking at 12:44. His teammate Jace Isley was given a penalty for cross checking at 12:55. Lethbridge’s Ty Nash also received a minor for cross checking at 12:55.

It didn’t take long for the game winner to be scored in the extra period. Justin Hall earned the assist with Alex Cotton scoring his second of the game, and season, to give the Hurricanes the win!

Lethbridge’s goaltender Bryan Thomson was named the first star of the game, with Cotton receiving second star honors. Red Deer’s goalie Connor Ungar was named the third star of the game.

UP NEXT

Up next for the Hurricanes is a couple of matchups on the road. They’re in Edmonton against the Oil Kings on Friday, October 15 then in Red Deer Friday, October 22. The ‘Canes make their return to the ENMAX Centre Saturday, October 23 against the Prince Albert Raiders.

The Hurricanes now have a record of 3-1-0-0, sitting in second place in the WHL’s Central Division.

Red Deer, meanwhile, is in third in the division with a record of 2-2-1-0. The Rebels visit the Calgary Hitmen on Friday, October 15.
