Coaldale Night of Lights Parade cancelled due to COVID restrictions

COALDALE, AB – For the second year in a row, Coaldale’s colourful Christmas festival will not be taking place.

The town says the event typically sees anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 attendees lining up along Main Street.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, however, officials are unlikely to be able to maintain two-metre social distancing requirements mandated by Alberta Health Services (AHS).

“We’ve exhausted every opportunity to try and find an alternative way to deliver the event for the community,” said Russ Tanner, Coaldale’s Director of Recreation and Community Services. “However, under the recommendation of our AHS inspector and through discussion with Town Council we have decided not to host the parade once again this year. While this is unfortunately the case for many other communities navigating covid19 restrictions at this time, Coaldale will be able to offer a number of other festive activities for the community to enjoy this winter in lieu of the parade.”

There will still be the Winter Walk-in-the-Park event at the Kin Picnic Shelter Park.

The theme this year is “In search of the Gem of the West.” Families can take a leisurely stroll through the park in search of “gems” – said to be magical displays designed by community groups, organizations, businesses, and individuals.

Opening night for the Winter Walk-in-the-Park is Saturday, November 20. The Kin Picnic Shelter Park will be open every Saturday and Wednesday between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm until December 29, excluding Christmas day.

“The Winter Walk-in-the-Park will provide an opportunity for a nice evening for families to stroll through the park and enjoy the scenery and display,” said Cindy Hoffman, Manger of Community Services at the Town of Coaldale. “The ‘In Search of the Gem of the West’ theme adds an element of exploration and storytelling so everyone can find a way to enjoy the winter season.”

The light displays will remain lit every evening until Monday, January 10.
