Clothing donations needed for Lethbridge’s homeless population as winter approaches

LETHBRIDGE, AB – We got a taste of winter at the end of October, but some residents felt it a lot more than others.

Streets Alive Mission is one of several organizations in Lethbridge that aims to help people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness make it through the colder months.

Director of Operations Cameron Kissick says many people do not have the same abilities to go somewhere to warm up nor to put on multiple layers of heavy clothing.

“There are a number of people that are living on the street that are impacted. There’s also a number of people who are in housing but are possibly below the poverty line that spend a significant amount of time needing to walk to work or wherever they’re going that don’t necessarily have the money to buy the required items and need to find a way to get it.

In the 2018 Alberta Point-In-Time Homeless Count, Homeless Hub reports that there were 223 people in the city who were experiencing homelessness.

Among the items most needed right now are hoodies and sweaters, jackets, boots and water-proof shoes, gloves, hand warmers, touques, and socks.

As shown in this article’s photo, Streets Alive barely has any shoes or boots left that it can offer to those who need them.

Kissick is urging anybody who is able to donate to do so. Any cash donations will be used to purchase the items that are needed the most.

Streets Alive is currently running their Stuff A Bag drive where you can pick up a reusable tote bag with a list of needed items so you can fill it up and bring in a donation.

“As you’re going through your closets and getting ready for winter yourself and you realize you have a couple of extra jackets, extra pairs of gloves, extra shoes, think of places like Streets Alive or the homeless shelter that will definitely use them.”
