COVID hospitalizations less than half of fourth wave peak in Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Thursday, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

383 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 331,214. Of those, 5,384 cases are active while 322,621 people have recovered.

With 8,948 tests conducted in that time, the positivity rate was 4.3 per cent.

In the South Zone, just 18 people tested positive.

Active infections in the region fell by 21.

Since yesterday’s update, five Albertans died from COVID with three in the Edmonton Zone and one each in the South and Central Zones. To date, 3,209 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The death in the South Zone was for a resident of the M.D. of Taber.

Provincially, 498 patients are currently hospitalized including 94 who have been admitted to intensive care. The number of hospitalized Albertans is less than half of what it was at the fourth wave peak on September 27, 2021. At that time, 1,063 were in hospital including 265 in ICU.

Thursday, LNN reported the updated local COVID-19 vaccination rates for the South Zone.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 122,112 cases, 1,817 active
    • 113 in hospital, 22 in ICU
    • 846 deaths
  • Edmonton Zone – 103,012 cases, 1,180 active
    • 158 in hospital, 44 in ICU
    • 1,308 deaths (three new)
  • North Zone – 45,630 cases, 1,055 active
    • 63 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 381 deaths
  • Central Zone – 37,522 cases, 861 active
    • 111 in hospital, nine in ICU
    • 387 deaths (one new)
  • South Zone – 22,896 cases, 468 active
    • 53 in hospital, 13 in ICU
    • 287 deaths (one new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone. The numbers in brackets show new cases or deaths over the past two days:

  • Lethbridge – 7,083 cases (six new), 148 active, 62 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 2,585 cases (two new), 55 active, eight deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 2,342 cases (three new), 52 active, 22 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 2,149 cases (one new), 41 active, 32 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 4,506 cases (five new), 62 active, 78 deaths
  • Brooks – 2,093 cases, nine active, 24 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,959 cases (one new), 44 active, 19 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,836 cases (two new), 31 active, 39 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,281 cases (two new), 51 active, 17 deaths (one new)
  • Cypress County – 845 cases, seven active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 779 cases, 26 active, four deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 646 cases, 18 active, 11 deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 569 cases, 26 active, seven deaths
