Lethbridge man charged after weapons complaint results in school lockdown

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge man has been charged in connection to a weapons complaint.

On Wednesday, November 24, Lethbridge Police responded to a report at around 1:30 p.m. that a man with a knife had been threatening others in the 1500 block of 4 Avenue North.

Police say the man was seen leaving the area in the direction of Westminster Elementary School. Officers contacted the school’s administration and the building was put into lockdown to ensure the safety of staff and students.

The man was found in the school playground and was taken into custody without incident just after 2 p.m. A knife was later found at his home nearby.

31-year-old Christopher David Smith is charged with assault with a weapon, possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public, and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. He remains in custody awaiting a Judicial Interim Release hearing.
