Lethbridge Police prepare for busy Christmas stopping impaired drivers

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Police Service officers are preparing for a possible busy Christmas season taking impaired drivers off the road.

Through the Christmas Check Stop Campaign, police will start randomly checking cars this weekend for impaired drivers.

Last Christmas police noted a significant decrease in the number of drivers out on the roads, as restrictions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic limited larger seasonal celebrations.

LPS says not only were social gatherings restricted, but restaurants, licensed establishments, and other outdoor events were also closed to dine-in service.

“Only one impaired driving charge was laid in connection with last year’s campaign,” says Acting-Sgt. Brent Paxman of the Traffic Response Unit.

The LPS is expecting more impaired drivers to be out on the road over the holidays now that people are allowed to come together in groups.

“While there’s still some public health measures in place relating to COVID, we’re anticipating an increase in holiday gatherings and we’ll be there to take any impaired drivers off the road and ensure everyone else can get home safely,” adds Paxman.

The primary goal of the Check Stop program is to locate and apprehend impaired drivers due to the significant risk to public safety they pose.

Those stopped will also be checked for valid documentation, including driver’s licenses, vehicle registration, insurance as well as equipment, liquor, and other violations.

Police say if you observe a suspected impaired driver, and it’s safe and lawful to do so, call 9-1-1 immediately. If you are going to drink, make arrangements for a safe ride home.

“With Operation Red Nose sidelined once again, please designate a sober driver (who does not drink any alcohol), call a taxi or other ride service, or use public transportation,” the release reads.
