UPDATED: CP Rail train carrying liquid petroleum derails in Vulcan County

ENSIGN, AB – UPDATE: Alberta Emergency Alert said on Wednesday morning that the clean-up of the derailment will continue throughout the rest of the week. Crews will be flaring the remaining impacted rail cars throughout the day.

No evacuations are being required at this time, but a train has derailed in Southern Alberta.

Alberta Emergency Alert started at 1:35 am on Monday, December 6, 39 cars derailed approximately half a kilometre northwest of Ensign.

They were carrying residual amounts of “anhydrous ammonia or liquid petroleum.”

CP Rail immediately dispatched teams to respond to the site and they continue to manage the situation.

Local roadways are not impacted. No injuries have been reported.

The rail company expects to have service resumed around 5:00 pm today. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
